Cyber-crime frauds tried to dupe a Fort based share broking agency by allegedly hacking its computer system and sending bogus emails to its clients for providing them a loan.
Police sources claim that the email was sent from the IP addresses of USA and Indonesia. Alert clients informed the company about the emails, which later learned that the emails were sent by the CEO of the company, a post that never existed.
“The Fort-based company is into share-broking and providing loans for computers from many years. Since the past many days, company clients have been receiving emails for providing them loans, asking them for the required documents and to deposit money for the same,” said an officer from Azad Maidan police station.
The officer added that some of the clients got suspicious since the company had never communicated with them regarding loan via email in the past. “Few clients then contacted the administration of the company and checked the authenticity of the emails.
The official was baffled as the emails sent to the clients were not sent by the company. Moreover, the bogus emails were signed by the CEO, a post that never existed,” the officer said.
The company officials then lodged a complaint with Azad Maidan police in this regard. “Investigations have revealed that the emails were sent by one JD Hapkin. We have registered a case under IPC sections 419 (impersonation) and 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) and section 66 C of Information Technology Act for identity theft,” the officer said.
